iPad 2 going high-rez – and super speed?

Some interesting rumours going around the interwebs about a higher resolution display in the iPad 2. Would certainly make sense as one of the few drawbacks of the iPad is the rather low pixel density. Readability is much improved with smaller pixels.
In order to run that mega resolution you also need a faster processor. That means even more impressive games, smoother video and nicer transitions in the UI. Yummie!
I also do look forward to being able to run iDisplay and use the extra pixels as extension to my laptop.

The optimal web tablet size

What’s the right size? Photo by coffeegeek.

Here’s a question I hope this year will answer: what’s the optimal web tablet size?

The iPad screen is 10 inches, the old Nokia web tablets are 5 inches, the Samsung Galaxy tab is 7 inches and the Notion Ink is like the iPad 10 inches.

It seems like 10 inches is as big as it gets when it comes to tablets, but who knows, the Netbooks also started out much smaller than they are today (they all seem to be about 10-12 inches but the first Asus EEE PC was a 7 inch laptop – really small). Maybe we will see 12 inch tablets released?

Steve Jobs thinks 10 inches is the optimal size but there are rumours about a smaller ipad. Personally, I doubt that. There already is a smaller iPad, it’s called an iPod.

The success of the ipad proves that 10 inch works. The big question is if the smaller tablets will survive. 7 inch is a difficult size segment – too large to be a phone, too small to be a tablet – but the Galaxy Tab seems to be mildly succesful. Maybe that’s because it’s the first Android tablet?

We’ll see what the year brings. What’s your thoughts? Is a 10 inch screen just about right or do you want your tablet to be larger or smaller? Let me know in the comments!

The Notion Ink Adam Web Tablet

2011 will be the year web tablets really take off, with iPad leading the way in 2010. One example is the Notion Ink Adam. Not only does it add an innovative UI on top of Android (let’s just hope it doesn’t ruin compatibility and introduces fragmentation – the last thing the Android market needs) but it also acts as a USB host. That means you should be able to plug in USB keyboards or hard drives with no problems.

Another cool thing with the Notion Ink Adam is that it’s coming from India. Great to see innovation coming from that part of the world.

The coming mobile ebook revolution and the One Billion Apps App Store

Have you seen the movie? No, but I’ve read the iPad.

Writing a book is hard work and selling it is equally difficult. That’s why publishers were invented.

But something is happening in the book business and the change is driven by mobile web tablets: books are going digital.

While the Amazon Kindle is a great product, it’s also very limited. No, the mobile web tablet from Apple, iPad, is what will bring ebooks to the masses. In fact, this is already happening on that smaller web tablet from Apple, the iPhone.

Books will most likely be sold just like any other application as part of the One Billion Apps App Store, which is basically an app store for every digital content item you can think of, way beyond the current scope of about 150’000 apps.

No one is building exactly this, yet, but the pieces of the puzzle are coming together. We’re moving towards a world where you will use the phone to buy digital content of any kind. We’re seeing it in MoSyncs’ cross platform app stores, we’re seeing it in how books outnumber games on the iPhone and we’re seeing it in initiatives such as Creations from Sony Ericsson. (Updated: an adult app store. Another example.)

The One Billion Apps App Store is coming.
